Rapido Trains UK is to fill a big gap in the ranks of βOOβ gauge Southern models with the Stroudley βE1β 0-6-0T.
Following the success of the βTerrierβ, Stroudley provided the London Brighton & South Coast Railway with a dedicated passen-ger version β the βDβ 0-4-2T β in 1873. A goods version appeared the following year. This was the βEβ, later called βE1β.
They might have looked like a stretched version of the βTerrierβ but they carved out a niche as a strong and capable performer.
Built: 1874 (78 built)
How long did they last? The last Isle of Wight example, No. 4 Wroxall, was withdrawn in October 1960 while the last βE1β used on the main-land, No. 32694, was not condemned until July 1961.
Where did they work? Through-out the LBSCR system, the Isle of Wight and Southampton docks.
